MINI Head Unit Black Screen
A black infotainment screen on a MINI is either a system that has shut down or a healthy head unit whose picture isn't reaching the display — and those two situations have completely different repairs. Working out which one you have is the diagnostic task, and BMW-group ISTA plus signal-path testing does it.
As on BMWs, the clues are in the functions: audio, phone and navigation prompts still working behind the dark screen usually mean the head unit is alive and the display path is the suspect.
Common Symptoms
- Infotainment screen dark while radio and phone continue working
- Screen flickers or shows intermittent black periods
- Display dark from start-up, or fails after a period of use
- Brightness or dimming settings worth ruling out first
Possible Causes
- Display brightness or comfort dimming settings — always verified first
- Display unit or backlight failure
- Damaged or disturbed display signal cable after trim or screen work
- Head unit video output failure
- Power supply faults to the display
- Software faults producing a blank output
How We Diagnose This Fault
We verify the settings first, then test display, signal path and head unit with genuine BMW-group ISTA and actuator tests.
- Display settings and dimming configuration verification
- Actuator testing of the display unit
- Signal path inspection and testing between head unit and display
- Fault memory analysis of the head unit
- Power supply verification to display and head unit
How We Repair This Fault
The repair matches whichever component the testing isolates — display, cable or head unit.
- Configuration correction where settings were the cause
- Display replacement where the display or backlight has failed
- Signal cable repair or correct re-seating where the path is at fault
- Head unit repair or coded replacement where its output has failed
- Power supply and wiring repairs where feeds are the issue
Can I Continue Driving?
Generally driveable — book diagnosis soon
Driving is unaffected. The practical losses are the screen's navigation display, camera views and media control until it's repaired.
Frequently Asked Questions
The radio still works — is the head unit OK?
It suggests the unit is alive and the fault is in the display path — but confirming that takes the actuator and signal tests rather than assumption, and that's exactly what we do.
Do you fix MINI screens as well as BMWs?
Yes — MINI's infotainment is BMW Group hardware, and we diagnose and repair it with the same manufacturer-level equipment.
The screen went dark after some interior work — connected?
Very possibly — disturbed connectors and cables behind trim are a classic post-work cause. If the timing matches, we check the signal path first.
How much is it likely to cost?
It genuinely ranges from a settings correction to a display or head unit — which is why we diagnose before quoting, so the number reflects the actual fault.
