Mercedes-Benz Warning Lights Explained
Mercedes-Benz clusters spell a lot of faults out in words rather than symbols, and use the brand's own names — ESP, ASSYST PLUS, SRS and ECO. This guide pairs those messages with the real telltales and explains what to do, written by an independent diagnostics specialist.
Red — stop & investigate
A red light means stop as soon as it is safe. Continuing to drive can cause expensive damage or become unsafe.
Engine oil pressure
StopOil pressure has fallen to a dangerous level. Continuing risks catastrophic engine damage.
What to do: Stop immediately when safe, switch off, and check the oil. Do not drive with this light on.
Coolant / temperature
StopThe engine is running too hot, often paired with a 'Check coolant level' message.
What to do: Pull over and let it cool. Check the coolant when cold and have the system inspected for leaks or a failed thermostat.
Battery / alternator
StopThe battery is not being charged — usually an alternator or drive-belt fault on Mercedes.
What to do: Turn off non-essential electrics and reach safety. The car will stop once the battery is flat.
Brake (red)
StopBrake fluid is low or a serious brake fault exists. Sometimes shown with a 'Brake: visit workshop' message.
What to do: Stop and check the fluid level. If the pedal is soft or dropping, don't drive — arrange recovery.
SRS restraint system
StopA fault in the airbag, seatbelt tensioner or occupancy system — airbags may not deploy in a collision.
What to do: Drive carefully and book it in. A common Mercedes cause is the front seat-weight sensor or a side-airbag connection.
Amber — check soon
Amber means something needs attention. It is usually safe to drive gently, but don't ignore it — book the car in for diagnosis.
Engine management (MIL)
CautionAn emissions-related fault is stored. Mercedes often shows 'Check engine' or 'Engine electronics' alongside.
What to do: Drive gently and book diagnostics. A flashing light points to a misfire — ease off the throttle.
ABS
CautionAnti-lock braking is disabled; ESP is usually lost with it. The car still brakes normally.
What to do: Allow longer stopping distances and get it diagnosed — frequently a wheel-speed sensor.
ESP (Electronic Stability Program)
CautionESP is switched off or has a fault. On a Mercedes it often illuminates with a 'ESP unavailable' message in the cluster.
What to do: If you turned it off, fine. If it appeared alone, have it checked — a steering-angle sensor is a common cause.
ASSYST PLUS service wrench
CautionA service is due. ASSYST PLUS tracks condition-based oil and inspection intervals and displays a spanner when they expire.
What to do: Book a service. The ASSYST countdown in the cluster tells you how far/time is left before the next one.
Brake pad wear
CautionFront or rear pads are at their limit — the pad wear sensor has worn through.
What to do: Book a brake inspection soon to avoid disc damage. Mercedes reports axle by axle.
Tyre pressure
CautionOne or more tyres are significantly under-inflated.
What to do: Check the pressures at the next opportunity. If a message flashes, stop and check for a puncture.
DPF (diesels)
CautionThe diesel particulate filter is blocked or regeneration has failed.
What to do: Complete the regeneration drive in the handbook. If it persists, book diagnostics to avoid a blocked filter.
Glow plugs (diesels)
CautionPreheat fault — a glow plug or relay has failed, leading to hard cold starts.
What to do: Wait for preheat before starting, then get it checked.
Green & blue — information
Green and blue lights tell you a system is switched on or working normally. No action needed.
Indicators / hazards
InfoIndicators or hazard lights are active.
What to do: Normal operation.
Lights on
InfoLights are switched on.
What to do: Normal operation.
ECO stop–start
InfoThe ECO stop–start system is available and will cut the engine at a standstill.
What to do: Normal operation. If ECO is amber, the battery isn't charged enough to allow a restart yet.
