BMW Condition Based Servicing (CBS) Explained

BMW uses 'CBS', otherwise known as Condition Based Service. BMW's system actively monitors various service components for wear, ensuring that your BMW only requests attention when it needs it.

How CBS works

BMW uses CBS, otherwise known as Condition Based Service. BMW's system actively monitors various service components for wear, ensuring that your BMW only requests attention when it needs it.

When your BMW wants attention it will come up on your dashboard / iDrive screen with "Service due" — normally "Oil Change Due". BMW stores service data in the key, so a key read is required to determine exactly what your car requires.

For example:

  • Inspection I — Oil, Microfilter and a small inspection.
  • Inspection II — Oil, Microfilter, Air filter, Fuel filter (if diesel), Spark plugs (if petrol), Vehicle check and additional checks.

CBS items & what the icons mean

These are the service items CBS monitors, with the icons shown on your BMW's dashboard and iDrive. Some icons may not be displayed on your particular model.

BMW CBS oil service icon

Engine oil service

The engine oil and oil filter are replaced. The microfilter is normally replaced at the same time. The system counts down remaining oil life as a percentage and distance.

BMW CBS microfilter service icon

Microfilter / pollen filter

Replaced with every engine oil service to keep cabin air clean. This icon may not be displayed on every model.

BMW CBS sparkplugs service icon

Spark plugs (petrol)

Replaced at every second oil service on petrol models, along with the air filter. This icon only appears on models so equipped.

BMW CBS brakefluid service icon

Brake fluid

Brake fluid is hygroscopic and replaced on a time basis — normally every 2 years — to keep brake performance and ABS/DSC response sharp.

BMW CBS frontbrakes service icon

Front brake pads

The front pads are close to their wear limit and need replacing. The discs should be checked at the same time. CBS tracks pad wear via the wear sensors.

BMW CBS rearbrakes service icon

Rear brake pads

The rear pads are close to their wear limit and need replacing. Reported separately from the front axle.

BMW CBS dpf service icon

Diesel particulate filter (diesel)

On diesel models CBS monitors the particulate filter. A service or regeneration is due when the soot load reaches its threshold.

BMW CBS vehiclecheck service icon

Vehicle check

A broader inspection service is due. This symbol can also appear for vehicle defects that require attention.

BMW CBS mot service icon

MOT

The annual MOT is tracked separately from the service schedule. CBS can flag the MOT due date so it isn't confused with a service interval.

Reading the CBS display: colour & countdown

Each CBS item is shown on the iDrive service screen with a colour and a countdown. The colour tells you the urgency; the countdown tells you how much is left — usually as a percentage and a distance in miles (and, for time-based items, a time in months). The display behaves like this:

Green

OK — the item is well within its interval. No action needed.

Yellow

Approaching due — the countdown is getting low. Book it in before it turns red.

Red

Due / overdue — the interval has expired. Book the service now; don't delay.

As the item is used, the percentage counts down from 100% and the remaining mileage falls. When it drops to roughly the last 2,000 miles / 30 days, the icon turns yellow and a "service due" message appears. At 0% — or once the time limit passes — it turns red and the item is overdue. A key read at JVS shows exactly where every item stands.

SERVICE DOCUMENTATION

Digital service history

BMWs now come with a digital service history rather than the traditional service book. The good news is, we can update the service history for you in line with the service carried out.

Jono's Vehicle Solutions is an independent BMW & MINI specialist in Telford — a former BMW mechanic, carrying out CBS servicing, key reads and proper digital service history updates using manufacturer-level equipment. We are not an authorised dealer and are not affiliated with BMW AG.
