BMW & MINI Warning Lights Explained
BMW and MINI share the same electronics and instrument-cluster systems, so the telltales are identical across the two ranges. This guide uses BMW's own system names — DSC, DBC, EML and the malfunction indicator — and tells you what each one means and what to do next.
Red — stop & investigate
A red light means stop as soon as it is safe. Continuing to drive can cause expensive damage or become unsafe.
Engine oil pressure
StopOil pressure has dropped dangerously low — the engine can be damaged within seconds.
What to do: Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off. Check the oil level on level ground; do not restart with this light on.
Coolant / engine temperature
StopThe engine is overheating. On BMWs this often appears with a top-up message before it turns critical.
What to do: Pull over and let it cool fully before touching the cap. Check the coolant level and get the cooling system looked at.
Battery / charging
StopThe battery is not being charged — a classic alternator or drive-belt fault on the N-series/B-series engines.
What to do: Switch off non-essentials and drive to safety. The car may stop once the battery is flat.
Brake system (red)
StopLow brake fluid, a serious brake fault, or the handbrake is still on. BMW pairs this with a message in the cluster.
What to do: If the handbrake is fully off and it stays on, stop and check the brake fluid. Don't drive if the pedal feels soft.
Airbag / SRS
StopA fault in the airbag, seatbelt tensioner or occupancy system — the airbag may not deploy in a crash.
What to do: Safe to drive gently, but book it in promptly. A common cause is the seat-mat occupancy sensor.
Seatbelt
StopA front seatbelt is not fastened.
What to do: Fasten all belts before moving off.
Amber — check soon
Amber means something needs attention. It is usually safe to drive gently, but don't ignore it — book the car in for diagnosis.
Engine management (MIL / 'Check Engine')
CautionAn emissions or engine-management fault has been stored — BMW calls this the malfunction indicator lamp.
What to do: Drive gently and book diagnostics. If it flashes, a misfire is damaging the catalyst — avoid hard driving.
ABS
CautionAnti-lock braking is disabled; DSC stability control usually switches off with it. Normal braking still works.
What to do: Leave longer stopping distances on slippery surfaces and get it diagnosed — often a wheel-speed sensor.
DSC / DBC (Dynamic Stability / Brake Control)
CautionDSC is switched off or a fault is present. DBC helps maintain brake pressure on hills and in traffic.
What to do: If you pressed the DSC-off button, that's expected. If it came on alone, have it checked.
EML (engine power limitation)
CautionElectrical engine load management is limiting power to protect the engine — a sensor, throttle or fuel-supply issue.
What to do: Reduce load and book diagnostics. The car may run in a reduced-power mode deliberately.
Brake pad wear
CautionThe front or rear pads are at their minimum thickness (a wear sensor has worn through).
What to do: Book a brake inspection promptly — delaying risks scoring the discs. BMW often flags front and rear separately via CBS.
Tyre pressure monitor (TPM / RDC)
CautionOne or more tyres are significantly under-inflated. BMW's system monitors rotational speed and pressure sensors.
What to do: Check pressures at the next opportunity. If it flashes or a message appears, stop and check for a puncture.
DPF (diesels)
CautionThe diesel particulate filter is blocked or a regeneration has failed.
What to do: Follow the handbook regeneration drive. If it persists, book a diagnostic check — driving on risks a blocked DPF.
Glow plugs / diesel preheat
CautionOn diesel BMWs this is preheat. If it stays lit or flashes, a glow plug or relay has failed.
What to do: Wait for it to go out before starting. If it stays on, get it checked.
Green & blue — information
Green and blue lights tell you a system is switched on or working normally. No action needed.
Indicators / hazards
InfoIndicators or hazard lights are active.
What to do: Normal operation.
Lights on
InfoSide or dipped lights are switched on.
What to do: Normal operation.
Cruise / speed limiter
InfoActive Cruise or a speed limiter is engaged.
What to do: Normal operation.
Auto stop–start
InfoStop–start is available or active at a standstill.
What to do: Normal operation.
