Ford Warning Lights Explained
Ford uses a wrench-shaped telltale for powertrain faults and tends to back it up with words like 'Powertrain malfunction' or 'Service Advancetrac' in the cluster. This guide covers the common Fiesta, Focus, Kuga and Transit telltales and what to do about each one.
Red — stop & investigate
A red light means stop as soon as it is safe. Continuing to drive can cause expensive damage or become unsafe.
Oil pressure
StopEngine oil pressure is dangerously low on your Fiesta, Focus, Kuga or Transit.
What to do: Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off. Check the oil level; do not drive with this light on.
Coolant / temperature
StopThe engine is overheating. On many Fords a 'Check coolant' message appears first.
What to do: Pull over, let it cool, then check the coolant level. Get the cooling system inspected for leaks or a failed thermostat.
Battery / charging
StopThe battery is not being charged — usually an alternator or drive-belt fault.
What to do: Turn off electrics you don't need and reach safety. The engine may stop once the battery is flat.
Brake (red)
StopLow brake fluid or a serious brake fault, or the handbrake is not fully released.
What to do: Check the brake fluid if the handbrake is off. If the pedal is soft, stop and arrange recovery.
Airbag / SRS
StopA fault in the airbag or seatbelt system — the airbag may not deploy in a crash.
What to do: Drive carefully and have it diagnosed promptly.
Amber — check soon
Amber means something needs attention. It is usually safe to drive gently, but don't ignore it — book the car in for diagnosis.
Powertrain / engine management (wrench)
CautionFord shows a wrench symbol for a powertrain or engine-management fault. On many models it is paired with a 'Check engine' or 'Powertrain malfunction' message.
What to do: Drive gently and book diagnostics. If the wrench flashes, a misfire is likely — ease off the throttle.
ABS
CautionAnti-lock braking is off; normal braking still works, but stability systems may be reduced.
What to do: Allow longer stopping distances and get it diagnosed.
ESP / traction control
CautionESP is switched off or has a fault. On Fords it often shows with a 'Service Advancetrac' message.
What to do: If you turned it off, fine. If it came on alone, have it checked.
Service wrench
CautionA service is due or an oil-life threshold has been reached.
What to do: Book a service. The cluster countdown shows how far or how long is left.
DPF (diesel)
CautionThe diesel particulate filter is blocked or a regeneration has failed — common on Transit and TDCi models.
What to do: Carry out the handbook regeneration drive. If it persists, book a check to avoid a blocked filter.
Tyre pressure / TPMS
CautionOne or more tyres are significantly under-inflated.
What to do: Check the pressures at the next stop. If it flashes, stop and check for a puncture.
Glow plugs (diesels)
CautionGlow-plug preheat or a fault in the system, common on cold-start TDCi engines.
What to do: Wait for it to go out before starting. If it stays lit, get it checked.
Green & blue — information
Green and blue lights tell you a system is switched on or working normally. No action needed.
Indicators / hazards
InfoIndicators or hazard lights are active.
What to do: Normal operation.
Lights on
InfoSide or dipped lights are switched on.
What to do: Normal operation.
Cruise / speed limiter
InfoCruise or a speed limiter is engaged.
What to do: Normal operation.
