MINI Infotainment Rebooting
Modern MINIs run BMW-group infotainment, so when the screen keeps rebooting — the MINI logo reappearing mid-journey, or the system cycling through start-up — the fault families are the same as on BMWs: corrupted or partially completed software, a failed update, ageing internal storage, or a fault in another infotainment module dragging the system down.
Because the hardware is BMW-group, the diagnosis needs BMW-group tools: genuine ISTA diagnostics and guided test plans, reading the head unit's own fault memory rather than guessing at resets.
Common Symptoms
- Infotainment restarts mid-journey or cycles through start-up
- Radio, navigation and phone functions drop out and return with each reboot
- Slow or unstable behaviour before the reboots began
- Sometimes follows a failed or interrupted update
Possible Causes
- Corrupted or partially completed software from a failed update
- Ageing internal storage in the head unit
- Faults in partner modules on the infotainment network destabilising the system
- Unstable power supply triggering protective restarts
- Failed programming attempts leaving mismatched software
How We Diagnose This Fault
We read the head unit's fault memory and software status with genuine BMW-group ISTA, then follow the guided test plan for what's actually stored.
- Fault memory analysis of the head unit and infotainment network
- Software version and update status review
- Network communication testing for partner-module faults
- Power supply and battery health checks
- Storage health assessment where the pattern indicates wear
How We Repair This Fault
The repair matches the test result — from software recovery through to coded head unit replacement.
- Controlled software recovery with genuine software where corruption is the cause
- Clean completion of previously failed updates
- Partner module repair where the head unit is healthy
- Head unit repair or coded replacement where storage or hardware has failed
- Verification across restart cycles before hand-back
Can I Continue Driving?
Generally driveable — book diagnosis soon
Your MINI drives normally — the fault affects the infotainment only. Navigation, media and phone functions will be unreliable until it's repaired.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do you work on MINI infotainment with BMW equipment?
Yes — MINI's systems are BMW Group, and we diagnose them with the same genuine ISTA tools and guided test plans we use on BMWs.
Could a reset fix it?
A reset clears a temporary glitch but not a recurring fault — and it clears the stored evidence too. If it's rebooting repeatedly, the fault is present and diagnosis is the route.
Is the head unit dying?
Not necessarily. Failed updates, power supply and partner-module faults all look identical from the driver's seat and are cheaper to fix than a head unit. ISTA testing identifies which you actually have.
Can this be fixed remotely?
Software-level recovery on eligible vehicles can often run via JVS Remote Connect. Hardware faults need the workshop — we confirm which after diagnosis.
