MINI Emergency Call System Fault

Modern MINIs — the F-platform generation and onwards — share BMW's electronic architecture, including the telematics system behind the automatic emergency call. When a MINI displays 'Emergency Call System Malfunction' or an SOS warning, it is the same family of faults we see on BMWs: the telematics unit, its internal backup battery, its antenna path, its power supply or its coding.

Because the hardware is BMW-group, these faults need BMW-group diagnosis — genuine ISTA diagnostics and guided test plans — rather than a generic code reader that can see the warning but not the detail behind it.

Common Symptoms

  • 'Emergency Call System Malfunction' or SOS warning displayed on the dash or infotainment screen
  • SOS status showing unavailable or the system status LED behaving incorrectly
  • MINI app remote services failing or the vehicle showing offline
  • The warning appearing at start-up and remaining, or appearing intermittently

Possible Causes

  • Aged or failed backup battery inside the telematics unit — the most common cause as these units age
  • Internal telematics unit failure
  • Water ingress at the unit or its connectors
  • Antenna path or wiring faults
  • Low vehicle battery voltage or an unregistered battery
  • Coding or configuration faults after module or head unit replacement

How We Diagnose This Fault

We diagnose MINI emergency call faults with the same genuine BMW-group ISTA equipment and guided test plans we use on BMWs, reading the telematics unit's own fault memory.

  • Full vehicle scan with analysis of the telematics unit's stored faults and their history
  • Guided test plan execution for the specific stored fault
  • Backup battery and power supply checks on the unit
  • Antenna path and communication testing
  • Vehicle battery and power management checks, including registration status
  • Coding and configuration verification where modules have been replaced

How We Repair This Fault

As with BMWs, the repair follows the test result — external faults are repaired without replacing the unit, and confirmed unit failures are replaced with the correct part for your VIN.

  • Telematics backup battery or unit replacement where the unit's self-checks confirm the fault
  • Genuine parts, coded, programmed and registered to your specific MINI
  • Wiring, connector and antenna repairs where the fault is external
  • Battery registration and charging system correction where voltage is the trigger
  • Post-repair verification that the warning clears and the system self-test completes

Can I Continue Driving?

Drive with care — have it diagnosed soon

Your MINI drives completely normally — but the automatic emergency call function may not work until the system is repaired, so we recommend booking diagnosis soon.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you work on MINIs, not just BMWs?

Yes — MINI is BMW Group, and we diagnose and repair MINIs with the same manufacturer-level equipment, guided test plans and genuine software.

What usually causes this on an F-platform MINI?

Most often the aging backup battery inside the telematics unit, followed by antenna, voltage and coding faults. ISTA testing identifies which applies to your car before anything is replaced.

Will an MOT pick this up?

The emergency call system isn't part of the standard UK MOT test, but the system exists for your safety in a real collision — we'd always recommend repairing it.

Can the fault be fixed the same day?

Diagnosis is usually completed in one session. If parts are needed we quote with the test evidence first, and confirm timing when you book the repair in.
