VW Group Coolant Warning Light — Common Causes and What To Do
A red coolant warning on your VW, Audi, Škoda or SEAT means low level or overheating. Here's what to do immediately, the most common causes on VW Group cars, and why topping up isn't a repair.

The coolant warning lamp
The blue coolant lamp on a VW Group dash is normal — it simply shows the engine is below working temperature. The red lamp is different: it means either low coolant level or excessive temperature, and it needs acting on immediately.
Red light, engine stopped
If the red lamp appears with a rising temperature gauge or steam, pull over safely and switch off. Do not open the expansion tank cap while hot — pressurised coolant at 100°C+ will scald. A petrol or diesel engine that has genuinely overheated can sustain head gasket or warping damage within minutes.
If the gauge is normal and there's no steam, the level sensor has usually just picked up a low tank. Let it cool, then check the level and top up with the correct G12/G13-specification coolant (never plain water except in an emergency).
Common causes of low coolant on VW Group cars
- External leaks — radiators, hoses, the water pump weep hole, or the plastic flanges on the cylinder head. VW Group plastic coolant flanges become brittle with heat cycles and are a very common leak point
- EGR cooler failure on 2.0 TDI engines — coolant passes into the exhaust with no visible leak; see our 2.0 TDI EGR cooler guide
- Heater matrix leaks — a sweet smell and damp carpets point here
- Water pump failure — the pump on many engines is driven by the timing chain or belt, so replacement is a known-parts-and-labour job at set intervals
- Head gasket faults — less common than owners fear, but pressurisation and coolant loss need a proper test to rule out
Why topping up is not the fix
Coolant is a sealed system: a slow top-up every week means the coolant is going somewhere. Continued driving low on coolant risks the cylinder head, and even a slow external leak eventually strands the car. A pressure test and block-test gas analysis at a workshop identifies the leak path quickly and cheaply.
We carry out full cooling system diagnosis — pressure testing, UV dye tracing and combustion gas analysis — at our Telford workshop. See servicing & maintenance or advanced diagnostics.
