VW Group ABS and ESP Warning Lights — Wheel Speed Sensors and Other Causes
ABS and ESP lights on a VW, Audi, Škoda or SEAT are usually a wheel speed sensor or corroded reluctor ring — and an amber ABS lamp is an MOT failure. Here's how the fault is traced properly.

ABS and ESP lights together
On VW Group cars the ABS lamp and the ESP/ESC lamp usually illuminate together, because they share the same control unit and the same core inputs. When ABS is disabled, stability control goes with it — the car still brakes normally, but it will not prevent a skid and the wheels can lock under hard braking.
If the ESP lamp is on with the ABS lamp off, and the button is not lit, the system may simply be switched off or have a fault in the stability function alone. Either way, an amber ABS lamp is an MOT failure point and needs proper diagnosis.
The most common cause by far
Wheel speed sensors. Every ABS and ESP function depends on accurate wheel speed from all four corners. A sensor that drops out — usually through corrosion, debris or a damaged reluctor ring — sets the lamp. It is the single most common ABS fault we see, and it is rarely expensive to fix.
Related causes:
- Corroded or cracked reluctor rings on the hub — common on older models, and often misdiagnosed as a sensor when the sensor is fine
- Wheel bearing play disturbing the sensor air gap
- Wiring damage to the sensor loom, especially front wheels on full lock
- Brake light switch faults, which disturb the ABS/ESP plausibility checks
- Steering angle sensor needing recalibration after alignment, battery work or column repairs
- ABS pump/control unit faults — less common, but a known issue on some platforms
Intermittent lights are still faults
An ABS lamp that disappears after a restart is storing a fault code and will return. Because ABS and ESP are safety systems, ignoring an intermittent fault means potentially losing stability control at the moment you need it — and an MOT failure at the next test.
How we diagnose it
We read all four wheel speeds live, which immediately shows which corner is dropping out and whether the signal is intermittent. We then inspect the sensor, ring and wiring at that corner before replacing anything. Where a steering angle sensor or control unit has been disturbed, a manufacturer-level basic setting or coding completes the repair correctly.
