Volkswagen Golf Intermittent Electrical Faults — CAN Bus Diagnosis

CUSTOMER COMPLAINT

The customer described a car full of gremlins: warning lights appearing and disappearing, the central locking working one day and not the next, and occasional instrument cluster error messages. Several garages had looked at it and replaced nothing, finding no codes stored when the car behaved.

SYMPTOMS

Intermittent central locking and window operation, random ABS and airbag warning lights, instrument cluster errors, battery going flat after a few days parked. Symptoms came and went with no pattern.

DIAGNOSTIC PROCESS

ODIS full-vehicle scan captured communication faults across multiple modules. Because the faults were intermittent, we set up to capture the network behaviour live: oscilloscope testing of the CAN bus, current-draw monitoring, and a systematic harness inspection in the areas the wiring diagram identified as shared by the affected modules.

FAULT FOUND

A section of the wiring harness had chafed against a bracket behind the dashboard, intermittently shorting one CAN bus wire to ground. The same harness also carried the feed for the central locking — explaining the seemingly unrelated symptoms.

REPAIR / SOLUTION

The chafed section was repaired properly — damaged conductors restored, insulation repaired and the harness re-routed and protected so it could not contact the bracket again.

RESULT

All communication faults cleared and never returned. The central locking and window faults disappeared along with the random warning lights — the customer's exact words: 'like a different car'.
