MINI Cooper S R56 Battery Drain — Parasitic Draw Test & Module Replacement
A MINI Cooper S with intermittent no-start and battery drain isolated by a parasitic current-draw test to a sticking control module; the module replaced and the new battery registered and coded with ISTA so the charging system recalibrated — at our Telford workshop.

CUSTOMER COMPLAINT
The owner's MINI would sometimes fail to start after a few days parked, and the battery had been going flat intermittently. A new battery had already been fitted elsewhere but the problem persisted, pointing to something draining it.
SYMPTOMS
Intermittent no-start, the battery flattening over a few days of standing, and occasional electrical oddities after a long park. Charging appeared normal while driving.
DIAGNOSTIC PROCESS
Confirmed battery health and charging output first, then carried out a parasitic current-draw test: current-clamp monitoring with the vehicle locked and allowed to sleep, isolating circuits to follow the measured draw to its source. The draw settled well above MINI's specified standby current and stayed there.
FAULT FOUND
A control module was failing to shut down properly when the car slept — it stuck awake, drawing current continuously and flattening the battery over a few days.
REPAIR / SOLUTION
The faulty module was replaced and coded to the vehicle. Because the battery had recently been replaced, we registered the new battery to the car using ISTA — this tells the charging system the battery's specification and age so it manages charging correctly, protecting the new battery. Standby current was then re-verified at normal levels.
RESULT
The MINI now starts reliably after weeks parked. Battery registration means the charging system treats the new battery correctly, protecting its lifespan.
