BMW 320d Flat Battery Every Morning — Parasitic Drain Investigation

A BMW 3 Series flattening its battery overnight, found with a systematic parasitic current-draw investigation — the cause wasn't the battery at all.

BMW 320d — BMW 320d Flat Battery Every Morning — Parasitic Drain Investigation (JVS case study, Telford)

CUSTOMER COMPLAINT

The owner was jump-starting the car most mornings. A new battery and an alternator check elsewhere hadn't solved it — the vehicle kept going flat after a day or two parked, especially after short trips.

SYMPTOMS

Battery going flat overnight or within a couple of days parked. No other obvious symptoms while driving.

DIAGNOSTIC PROCESS

First the basics: charging system output and battery health confirmed good. Then a systematic parasitic draw investigation — current clamp monitoring with the vehicle locked and 'sleeping', isolating circuits one by one following the measured draw rather than guessing.

FAULT FOUND

A aftermarket accessory installed by a previous owner had been wired incorrectly and never shut down properly, holding a control module permanently awake. The vehicle was drawing several times its normal standby current.

REPAIR / SOLUTION

The incorrect wiring was removed and the accessory fed properly through the correct switched supply. Sleep current verified back to normal manufacturer levels over an extended monitoring period.

RESULT

The car now starts reliably after weeks parked, and the customer finally stopped carrying a jump pack. Root cause: a wiring fault — not the battery the earlier repair had replaced.
