BMW ATM Module Faults

The ATM — Advanced Telecommunications Module — is the telematics unit fitted to a range of BMWs, working alongside the head unit to provide emergency call, teleservices and ConnectedDrive connectivity. Like any telematics hardware it has an internal backup battery, mobile communication hardware and a limited service life.

ATM faults typically surface as the familiar emergency call warnings, loss of connected services, or communication faults between the ATM and the head unit or vehicle network.

Common Symptoms

  • 'Emergency Call System Malfunction' / 'SOS Call System Malfunction' warnings
  • ConnectedDrive online services unavailable or failing intermittently
  • My BMW app remote functions not reaching the vehicle
  • Communication faults stored against the ATM in the fault memory
  • Occasional co-occurring head unit or navigation complaints where the units are linked

Possible Causes

  • Internal backup battery failure within the ATM
  • Age-related internal hardware failure of the module
  • Water ingress or connector corrosion at the module location
  • Power supply or fuse faults feeding the ATM
  • Software corruption, failed updates or coding mismatches
  • Communication faults on the vehicle network between the ATM and other control units

How We Diagnose This Fault

We start from the ATM's own fault memory with genuine BMW ISTA and follow the guided test plan for whatever is actually stored.

  • ISTA fault memory analysis focused on the ATM and its communication partners
  • Guided test plan execution for the stored fault
  • Power supply and earth verification at the module, including connectors and fuses
  • Vehicle network communication testing to confirm the ATM is reachable and integrated
  • Software version and coding status checks where a software cause is suspected

How We Repair This Fault

If the ATM itself is confirmed faulty, replacement is a coding and programming job tied to your vehicle — not a plug-and-play swap.

  • Replacement with the correct ATM variant for your vehicle, identified from the VIN
  • Coding, programming and registration of the new module to the vehicle
  • External circuit and wiring repairs where testing shows the module is healthy
  • Software recovery or updates where corruption is confirmed
  • Post-repair verification of SOS status and connected services

Can I Continue Driving?

Drive with care — have it diagnosed soon

The fault is confined to the telematics system — the car drives normally, but the automatic emergency call may not be available until it's repaired.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the ATM in a BMW?

It's the Advanced Telecommunications Module — the telematics control unit on certain models, responsible for the emergency call system, teleservices and ConnectedDrive connectivity. Which unit your car has is confirmed from the VIN.

Why would an ATM fail?

The usual causes are the aging internal backup battery, general electronic component failure over time, water ingress, or software corruption. ISTA testing identifies which applies before anything is replaced.

Can an ATM fault affect my navigation or iDrive?

On some vehicles the ATM works closely with the head unit, so telematics faults can coincide with infotainment complaints. That's why we scan the whole vehicle rather than assuming the ATM is the only suspect.

Is replacement the only option?

No. If the fault is power supply, wiring, antenna or software related, those are repaired without replacing the module. Only confirmed internal failure points to replacement.
